July 4th: Community, Candidates, and Democracy

250 Years: Marking July 4th Together

This July 4th marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, and many of us are feeling the weight of this moment. Pride, frustration, grief, determination, and hope can all exist in the same complicated country.

Local action gives us a way to turn those complicated feelings into something we can do together. This week, we can march in Utica, gather at Fort Stanwix in Rome, support Democratic candidates, and speak out against authoritarianism. It is also a chance to connect with neighbors and reflect on the founding principles at the center of the holiday.

March in the Utica 4th of July Parade

Looking for a fun way to support our Democratic candidates and get some exercise? Join the Oneida County Democratic Women’s Club and many of our local candidates as they march in the Utica 4th of July Parade on Saturday, July 4.

Lineup begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Our Lady of Lourdes parking lot at 2 Barton Ave., Utica. Parking is available in the lot off Sunset Avenue and on nearby side streets.

Ask Gov. Hochul to sign the Data Center Moratorium Bill without further delay!

Last month the NY State legislature passed the Data Center Development Act (A11560/S10642), which will establish a one-year moratorium on large data center projects in NY. However, until the Governor signs the bill, data center projects that have begun construction or have secured the necessary local and state permits will be exempt from the moratorium and other provisions of the bill. These centers are massive, incredibly energy hungry, water thirsty, environmentally harmful, and climate busting projects.

Governor Hochul should sign the data center moratorium bill NOW and not allow more time, during which large projects will surely try to push ahead. Please call today, leave a message, and then keep calling as often as you can, until she signs the bill! Our calls will also help support the Ilion residents who are fighting back against the large data center proposed for the old Remington site!

Call 518-474-8390 (press #1 to leave a message, #2 to speak to a staffer in the Governor’s office). Ask the Governor to sign the data center moratorium bill now!

Trainings to Help Blake Get Out the Vote

Blake Gendebien’s campaign is offering GOTV trainings for the general election, including phone banking and canvassing. If you’ve been wondering how to help Blake, these trainings are the place to start!

The GOTV Phone Bank Training will help volunteers get comfortable making calls. The session covers how to log in, use the on-screen script and voter information, record voter responses, and handle common questions. It will also introduce relational organizing: reaching out to people you already know to help strengthen campaign outreach.

To sign up for phone bank training, fill out the form and someone from the campaign will follow up with dates and times.

The GOTV Canvassing Training will help volunteers get ready to knock doors for Blake. Trainings are held on Zoom at 10:00 a.m. ET on Saturdays. No experience is required.

Join Indivisible’s Immigrant Justice Summer Training Series

When ICE comes to your community, do you know what to do? This summer, Indivisible is giving you a blueprint.

Immigrant Justice Summer is a five-call national training series that will level up how you show up for immigrant justice. You’ll learn how to build up hyper-local networks and connect to experienced organizations to respond to ICE surges or new concentration camps in your area.

With ICE buying up warehouses and anti-immigration agencies turbocharged by the GOP’s recent infusion of $70 billion into their coffers, we all need to be prepared. By the end of our series, you’ll be equipped to mount a safe, immigrant-aligned response when there’s an emergency action needed in your community to protect your neighbors from Trump’s detention and deportation regime.

Sessions begin on July 9. Learn more and register to secure your spot here.
